Louis XIII, Double louis d'or, LVDO variety, 1640, pre-issue, from Abbé Thilliez collection., Large laureate head of the king right, with the large wick., Cross formed of eight crowned L's, accosted by four lis. Mint letter in heart., Extremely rare exemple of the Double Louis d'or with the large head and the LVDO legend, in almost superb condition, very well centered. One will notice very discreet adjustment marks on the reverse, visible on the reliefs, in particular on the L. This example is considered to be one of the mint essays mentioned in a declaration dated 31 May 1640, before the obverse and reverse legends were adopted. It should be considered an absolute rarity, highly sought after by collectors, as it is one of a very small number of essays struck before the official minting of the Double Louis d'Or.
