Draped bust of Marianne, wearing a Phrygian cap, facing, slightly turned to the left., Denomination surrounded by the French motto., Specimen of the 10 Centimes coin by engraver François Rude, with a nickel blank. Of the highest rarity: engravings not referenced in the GEM and missing from the Carles-Jongues collection. Only one other known example (iNumis, Mail Bid Sale 24, lot 1325 & 47, lot 626) with the same observe die only, reverse die unpublished. Variety of the specimen presented at GEM 35.1, with a larger bust without visible shoulders: this is the portrait (and observe die?) used for the specimens of the 5 Centimes coin from the same year. On the reverse, a specific engraving for this strike seems to have been designed, with the word ‘CENTIMES’ written in letters with similar fineness to the reverse die of the 5 Centimes coin, and the 1 in ‘10’ symbolised in Roman numerals with a single bar. The reverse die of the 10 Centimes that follows (and which illustrates the GEM) has slightly thicker lettering and the 1 is symbolised with Arabic numerals.GEM 35.1var, 6h, magnetisable blank.
