Obv: [IM]P AEMILIANUS PIUS FEL [AUG]; laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Aemilian to the right.
Rev: SPES PUBLICA; Spes advancing to the left, holding flower in right hand and raising skirt; across fields: S C.
Very rare. Brown tone.
An expressive face of this short-lived emperor and a gem of mid 3rd century die-cutting.
Not much is known about Aemilian, other than that he was governor of Upper Moesia and was proclaimed emperor by his troops in 253 AD. Money entrusted to him to effectuate a peace treaty with the Goths, he distributed among his soldiers before moving on Rome. Emperor Gallus was then killed by his army, leaving Aemilian as actual emperor. The Senate declared him enemy of the State and elevated Valerian as Emperor. When Aemilian entered Rome a few days later, the Senate recognized him as emperor. Too late though to stop Valerian and his legions. A battle was fought near Spoleto before Aemilian was killed by his troops.
