Heraklea Pontika was an city on the south coast of the Black Sea, at the mouth of the river Lycus. Prospering from the rich, fertile adjacent lands and the sea-fisheries of its natural harbor, Heraklea soon extended its control along the coast. It became a major center of trade for the southern coast of the Black Sea. So much so that it founded the colonies Kallatis and Chersonesos.
The city was named after Herakles who, the Greeks believed, entered the underworld at a cave on the adjoining Archerusian promontory to execute his 12th labour for king Eurystheus: capturing the three-headed dog Kerberos.
The city is also mentioned in the Anabasis by Xenophon. At first the citizens of Herakleia send gifts of food to Xenophon’s army. But when the army decides to demand 10,000 Kyzikene staters as well, the city prepares itself for a siege. Discord in the army makes that the army splits in three parts and each goes its own way, leaving Herakleia untouched.
