The Indo-Sassanian coins are among the first imitations of the Sassanian coins found in India. They are found in North-Western India, and were minted by the Hephthalite Huns or the Gurjaras (who were probably a branch of the Hephtalite people) in Saurashtra. These hunnic imitations of Sassanian coins show a winged bust of the Sassanian Emperor Peroz on obverse and the standard, albeit very crude, Zoroastran fire altar with the attendants on the reverse. These coins were further imitated for the coming 500 years and the imitations, used in most of central, western and north-western India are generally called "Indo-Sassanian" coins. Mitchiner considered them to be rare, though since the publication of MACW a fair number of these coins appeared for sale.
