Bronze kesarah (punchee), 15th-early 16th century, Kashmir Sultanate, India
Al-Sultan / Al-Azam / (name of the ruler), with a horizontal line with a knot above the Sultan's name // Zarb Kashmir. 17mm, 5.15 grams.
The Kashmir Sultanate (1339–1586) was a Muslim kingdom established by Shah Mir, whose dynasty replaced the earlier Hindu rulers of Kashmir. The sultanate developed a distinctive Indo-Islamic culture and coinage, reaching particular prominence under Zain-ul-Abidin (1420–1470), remembered for his religious tolerance and patronage of the arts. After periods of internal conflict and rule by the Chak dynasty, Kashmir was conquered and incorporated into the Mughal Empire under Akbar in 1586.
