Inauguration of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands – 1898
This commemorative gilt medal was issued in 1898 to celebrate the inauguration of Queen Wilhelmina as monarch of the Netherlands. She officially assumed royal duties on 6 September 1898, following her mother Queen Emma’s regency. Wilhelmina was only 18 years old at the time of her investiture.
Obverse:
Profile portrait of young Queen Wilhelmina facing left, wearing a small crown. Around the edge is the Dutch legend:
"WILHELMINA KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN" (Wilhelmina Queen of the Netherlands).
Above her head is a radiant star, symbolizing guidance or divine right.
Reverse:
Two winged cherubs (putti) holding a crowned coat of arms with a portrait of Wilhelmina. The background is filled with radiant beams, with a crown at the top and the date “1898” beneath the shield. A floral garland and ribbon complete the lower design.
