Historical Context: Count Félix de Merode (1791–1857) was a key figure in the Belgian Revolution of 1830 and played a prominent role in the formation of the Belgian state. A devout Catholic and a committed liberal, he was a member of the Provisional Government and later of the National Congress that drafted the Belgian Constitution. He refused the Belgian throne out of principle but remained active in politics and diplomacy throughout his life. This medal, engraved by renowned medallist Léopold Wiener, pays tribute to his dedication to religion, homeland, and liberty — ideals he championed during the formative years of Belgium
Obverse: Uniformed bust of Baron de Stassart facing left, adorned with multiple decorations. Inscription: "G. J. A. BARON DE STASSART". Below the shoulder: "HART. F."
Reverse: Inscription in nine centered lines, with two interlinked wreaths above:
"LES LIBÉRAUX BELGES AU BARON DE STASSART, ÉLU SÉNATEUR PAR LES ARRONDISSEMENS DE BRUXELLES NAMUR ET NIVELLES LE 11 JUIN 1839 ; DESTITUÉ LE 17 DES FONCTIONS DE GOUVERNEUR DU BRABANT, PAR LE MINISTÈRE DE THEUX, EN HAINE DE CETTE TRIPLE ÉLECTION". A small star below.
Historical Context: Goswin Joseph Augustin, Baron de Stassart (1780–1854), was a key liberal statesman during the early years of the Belgian monarchy. He served as President of the Belgian Senate (1831–1838) and Governor of the Province of Brabant. The medal commemorates his election to the Senate on 11 June 1839 for the arrondissements of Brussels, Namur, and Nivelles — and his politically motivated dismissal shortly afterward by the conservative government of Barthélemy de Theux de Meylandt. This episode reflects the early ideological struggles in Belgian politics between liberals and Catholics. The medallist, identified as “Hart. f”, remains obscure but the piece is finely engraved.
