King Albert I – Commemorative Medal for Belgian Fallen Soldiers (1914–1915)
Obverse:
Left-facing bust of King Albert I of Belgium in military uniform, wearing the Order of Leopold. Around the edge: “ALBERT ROI DES BELGES”. Beneath the bust: signature J. FISCH.
Reverse:
Dramatic scene of a fallen Belgian soldier on a battlefield, his rifle lying beside him. A personification of Belgica, or the Nation, draped in classical robes, gently lays a laurel wreath over the dead soldier. To the left: inscription “PRO PATRIA” (For the Fatherland). To the right: “1914–1915”.
Historical context:
This World War I memorial medal was issued in honour of Belgian soldiers who died in the early stages of the war. The image of King Albert I connects the state directly to the sacrifice of its troops. The reverse, marked by emotion and symbolism, reflects Belgium’s grief, gratitude, and patriotic pride. Artist J. Fisch captures both solemnity and dignity in this touching tribute to the fallen heroes of the Yser and other early battles.
