Historical context:
Created in the aftermath of World War I, this deeply symbolic medal by Belgian sculptor Jesse Dupon (1870–1931) evokes classical heroism and eternal remembrance. The obverse commemorates the sacrifice of Belgian soldiers with an image reminiscent of Roman funerary rites. The reverse elevates the fallen to mythic status, guided skyward by a winged genius, evoking both Christian redemption and ancient valor. The Latin inscriptions emphasize timeless honor and patriotic devotion.
