Reverse:
Engraved tribute in French: "HOMMAGE / À DEROY JEAN / TITULAIRE DE LA / CARTE DU COMBATTANT" ("Tribute to Jean Deroy, Holder of the Combatant's Card"). Below, the Belgian royal arms: crowned lion shield flanked by oak and laurel branches, topped by a royal crown.
Historical context:
This Belgian First World War plaquette was awarded to holders of the “carte du combattant”, a certificate granted to veterans who had served at the front. The obverse evokes the trench warfare experience of Belgian infantrymen during the 1914–1918 conflict. The name Jean Deroy is personally engraved on the reverse, identifying the recipient. Such named tributes were typically issued in the interwar period as part of Belgium’s official recognition of frontline soldiers.
