Belgium – Bronze Plaquette Honouring the City of Namur, French Army Citation, 1927
Obverse:
Allegorical scene: at left, a female figure wearing a Phrygian cap symbolising the French Republic; at right, a crowned female figure personifying the city of Namur. Between them a vertical sword, sign of defence and shared struggle. In the background: the skyline of Namur with towers and fortifications. A laurel branch and the Croix de Guerre appear in the corners. Below:

Inscription of the official French Army citation honouring Namur:
"Citation à l’Ordre de l’Armée Française — NAMUR —
Place forte, attaquée le 21 Août 1914, violemment bombardée par un ennemi très supérieur en nombre et dont la garnison ne s’est retirée qu’après avoir rempli, pendant 4 jours, la mission d’arrêt. Prise d’assaut, incendiée en partie, a supporté avec calme et dignité, malgré ses deuils, une occupation de plus de 4 années, sans cesser d’avoir foi dans la victoire finale."

This commemorative plaquette was issued in 1927 to mark the official French Army citation awarded to Namur for its valiant resistance during the German assault of August 1914. Despite overwhelming force, the defenders held out for four days. The imagery on the obverse celebrates the shared struggle of France and Belgium, while the full reverse citation preserves the official wording of this honour. A tribute to both military and civilian endurance during World War I.
