Historical context:
This medal commemorates General Georges Leman, commander of the fortress city of Liège during the early stages of World War I. On 15 August 1914, Fort Loncin, one of Liège’s key defenses, was obliterated by a direct hit from a massive German shell fired by a 42-cm “Big Bertha” howitzer. The fort’s explosion killed hundreds of Belgian soldiers. General Leman was found unconscious under the rubble and taken prisoner by the Germans. His courageous defense of Liège made him a national hero and a symbol of Belgian resistance. The medal, created by renowned sculptor Godefroid Devreese, powerfully captures both the tragedy and the valor of this moment.
