Historical context:
This medal commemorates the attainment of majority (age 18) by Prince Léopold, Duke of Brabant and heir to the Belgian throne. Born in 1835, Leopold reached majority on 9 April 1853, a milestone that was celebrated by official festivities organized by the City of Brussels. Such a coming-of-age marked the formal beginning of his constitutional and dynastic responsibilities. He would ascend the throne twelve years later as King Leopold II. The medal was engraved by Hart, an official medallist of the Belgian monarchy.
