Obverse:
Belgian soldier in full uniform charges forward with bayonet-mounted rifle during battle. Explosions and fallen enemies surround him on a rugged terrain. Artist's monogram “AW” (Armand Wissaert) and signature of sculptor “H. Le Roy” at lower left. Inscription: “OFFENSIVE DES FLANDRES – 28 SEPT. – 11 NOV. 1918”.
Reverse:
King Albert I of Belgium, on horseback and in uniform, enters Brussels at the head of his troops. He is flanked by high-ranking officers and followed by infantrymen bearing flags. Inscription: “RENTREE DU ROI A BRUXELLES – 22 NOV 1918”.
Historical Context:
This medal commemorates two key moments at the end of World War I. The obverse marks the successful Allied Flanders Offensive of autumn 1918, which helped break the German lines in Belgium. The reverse celebrates the triumphant return of King Albert I to liberated Brussels on 22 November 1918, symbolising the restoration of national sovereignty after four years of occupation. The medal was designed by noted Belgian sculptor Hippolyte Le Roy (1863–1943), known for his public monuments and patriotic works.
