Historical context:
This medal commemorates the centenary of the Stavnsbaandets løsning — the abolition of the Danish peasant conscription system (stavnsbånd) in 1788 under King Christian VII. The reform liberated male peasants from being tied to estates, marking a foundational moment in Danish agrarian and social history. Issued in 1888 under Christian IX and designed by medallist S. Lindahl, the medal symbolically connects both monarchs as agents of national progress. Struck in tin, it was intended for wide commemorative circulation.
