Historical context:
This medal commemorates the joint Austro-Prussian victory over Denmark in the Second Schleswig War of 1864. The war resulted in the annexation of Schleswig and Holstein, formerly under Danish rule, into the German Confederation. The three generals honored played major roles in the military campaign. Medals like this were popular patriotic tokens, often struck in tin for wide circulation.
