Historical context:
This commemorative cross was issued in 1892 to mark the 50th wedding anniversary of King Christian IX and Queen Louise of Hesse-Kassel, married in 1842. Christian IX was known as the "Father-in-law of Europe" due to the dynastic marriages of his children into many European royal houses. The cross-shaped form, motto, and portraits celebrate both dynastic stability and national loyalty. These crosses were typically struck in bronze or white metal and often gilded, as here, and worn or distributed as patriotic keepsakes.
