Historical Context:
This bronze medal was issued in 1921 by the city of Antwerp to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jan van Beers (1821–1888), a renowned Flemish poet, teacher, and advocate for the Dutch language in Belgium. The reverse refers to the “Bestendig Festival,” a permanent cultural celebration initiated in the early 20th century to honor Flemish literary figures. The medal was engraved by Alphonse Mauquoy (1870–1944), a leading Belgian medallist of his generation.
