Historical context:
This white metal medal was issued in 1872 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Capture of Brielle on 1 April 1572, when the Sea Beggars (Watergeuzen) seized the town from Spanish forces—an event considered the symbolic beginning of the Dutch Revolt. Designed by S. de Vries of The Hague, the medal celebrates liberty and national awakening through allegorical imagery.
