Historical context:
This medal celebrates the appointment of Sydonia Hedwig Zäunemann (1714–1740) as kaiserlich gekrönte Poetin ("Imperially crowned poet") by the Royal Academy of the University of Göttingen on 3 January 1738. At just 24, she became the first officially recognised female Poet Laureate in Germany. The poetic and symbolic Latin-German inscription "Hier stets zu glänzen aus Gerens Græntzen" may be interpreted as “To shine forever beyond the bounds of honour.” This aligns with the Enlightenment idea of the elevation of virtue and intellect, especially remarkable for a woman of her time.
