Historical Context:
King Willem III (1817–1890) was the third monarch of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg, reigning from 1849 until his death on 23 November 1890. His reign encompassed the further consolidation of constitutional monarchy, as well as Dutch colonial expansion in the East Indies. This memorial issue was struck immediately after his death, with symbols of sovereignty, honour, and mortality: the palm and laurel for glory, poppies for death, and flax for national prosperity. It was produced by the Utrecht medallic firm C.J. Begeer, one of the principal Dutch manufacturers of commemorative medals in the 19th century. The death of Willem III ended the male line of the House of Orange-Nassau, leading to the accession of his daughter, Queen Wilhelmina, at the age of ten.
