Historical context:
Ewoud Willem van Dam van Isselt (1796–1860) was a Dutch poet, officer, and politician. He took part in the Ten Days’ Campaign (1831) during the Belgian Revolt and became known for his courage and patriotism. Alongside his military career, he gained recognition as a poet and writer, with works often reflecting national pride and Christian conviction. After his death in Geldermalsen in 1860, he was commemorated with this medal, designed by the renowned medallist Jacob Wiener. The reverse highlights his significance in both literature and public life, combining symbols of military service and poetry. The medal is catalogued in Dirks (no. 822), Bax (no. 108), and Kreeft (no. 44).
