Historical context:
This medal was struck in 1936 to commemorate the tricentennial of the Pharmacopoea Amstelredamensis, the first official Dutch pharmacopoeia compiled by Nicolaes Tulp following the 1636 outbreak of plague in Amsterdam. Tulp, physician and mayor of the city, is best remembered today from Rembrandt’s famous painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp (1632). The medal, designed by M. P. J. Fleur, highlights his contributions to medicine and public health in the Dutch Republic.
