Historical Context:
This privately issued copper token belongs to the Conder Token series, produced in response to the chronic small-change shortage in late 18th-century Britain. The designs embody Enlightenment ideals — the stag representing purity and freedom, while the plough symbolises honest labour and productivity. Tokens like this circulated widely until the government resumed official copper coinage in 1797 under George III.
