The Netherlands – Ministry of War Canteen Token – 10 Cent – Schulman 1603 – rare colourless / translucent variant
Unusual and visually striking 10 cent canteen token of the Dutch Ministry of War, catalogued as Schulman 1603.
This type is normally encountered in blue plastic, however this specimen is completely without colour, resulting in a translucent, almost glass-like appearance. The design remains clearly visible in relief, giving the piece a highly distinctive character.
Historical context
These tokens were issued by the Dutch Ministry of War for use within military canteens and barracks, functioning as a controlled internal currency. They were not intended for general circulation, but rather for restricted use by military personnel.
Produced in the mid-20th century (circa 1950s), these plastic tokens reflect a period in which alternative materials were used for institutional money, offering durability and low production costs compared to metal coinage.
The standard issues are found in coloured plastic (most commonly blue), making this colourless example particularly unusual within the series.
