Stichtsche Jachtvereeniging – Obverse Trial Strike in Lead – Maarten Pauw, 1948
Obverse:
Lead trial strike of the obverse design for the medal of the Stichtsche Jachtvereeniging, founded on 6 September 1948. A rider on horseback facing right, with the skyline of Utrecht in the background, including the Dom Tower. Around: “STICHTSCHE JACHTVEREENIGING”. Below: “OPGERICHT 6 SEPTEMBER 1948”.
Reverse:
Plain reverse, showing the negative impression and pressure traces from the striking process. No reverse design.
Historical Context:
This is a lead trial strike of the obverse for the medal of the Stichtsche Jachtvereeniging, an Utrecht hunting and equestrian association founded in 1948. The regular medal was issued in bronze and shows the same equestrian design with the Utrecht skyline. The design is attributed to Maarten Pauw, a Dutch sculptor and medallist associated with Begeer.
Lead trial strikes were produced as working pieces during the medal-making process, usually to test the relief, detail and overall effect of the die before regular production. Because these pieces were not intended for general distribution, they are usually much scarcer than the finished medals.
