Historical Context:
This large bronze presentation piece was awarded to J.C. van Eelde on the occasion of his 25th anniversary as commissioner of the Spaarbank te Utrecht. The Latin motto “PARSIMONIA MAGNUM VECTIGAL” means “Thrift is a great income”, an appropriate motto for a savings bank. The image of the gleaning woman refers to careful saving and the gathering of what might otherwise be lost. The Utrecht connection is clearly expressed through the Dom Tower and the city arms. The medal was modelled by W. Achtenhagen and produced by Begeer.
