Over the centuries, the former Roman Empire of Byzantium gave rise to numerous coins, which today are among the treasures and favorite pieces of many a collector's collection. Due to the crusades and migrations of the time, many different types of money were carried to Byzantium. After a reform of the materials in the 12th century and at the beginning of the "Latin Empire", the use of billon (copper-silver mixture) and pure copper was then increasingly used. A highlight of the historical Byzantine coins is the image of Jesus Christ on their obverse sides.
