The peace of Rijswijk, signed on the 20th of September 1697 between representatives of France and the Grand Alliance, made an end to the nine years’ war between these parties. A large amount of medalists fabricated medals commemorating this event, including Jan Luder, who was commissioned to do so by the city council of Muiden (North Holland). This remarkably small medal had a rather unique function: it was given to the participants of the Lottery in Muiden that year that were unfortunate enough to not draw any other prizes. Five different pairs of dies are known (This medal was struck using die-pair B), as well as some rare strikes in gold.
Obverse: Mercy standing with kneeled mother and child, bird between the figures - DE BARMHERTIGHEYD ROEMT TEGEN HET OORDEEL
Reverse: Burning altar with the coat of arms of Muiden, supported by two lions – 1697 DE VREEDE TOT RYSWYK GESLOOTEN.
