Keerzijde: opschrift met krans – 1838 1 mei 1888 KONINKLIJK GENOOTSCHAP NATURA ARTIS MAGISTRA
Natura Artis Magistra, today better known as ARTIS, was founded in 1838 under the auspices of King William I, making it pre-eminently the oldest zoo in the Netherlands. Already in 1888, when the zoo exuberantly celebrated its 50th anniversary, this memorable fact was reason for the minting of this commemorative medal. Given the fact that this medal relates to the city of Amsterdam and its history, it has been included by renowned Amsterdam collector Dreesman in his catalog regarding medals of the city.
Depicting beautifully designed images of an elephant, tiger and lion, this medal is a fan favorite amongst collectors!
