Obafemi Awolowo was a major political figure in Nigeria, born on March 6, 1909, in Ikenne and died on May 9, 1987. He was the first Premier of the Western Region of Nigeria from 1954 to 1960 and is recognized for introducing free and compulsory primary education, significantly increasing literacy rates. Under his leadership, the Western Region experienced significant economic development, including the creation of Africa's first television station, Western Nigeria Television. He modernized agriculture, improved infrastructure, and promoted local industries. Although he never became Nigeria's president, he served as Finance Minister during the Nigerian Civil War. Awolowo is considered a founding father of modern Nigeria, and many institutions are named after him.
