This $50 note, issued by the Canal Bank of New Orleans, is dated from a period between 1841 and 1895. It belongs to the category of obsolete banknotes, i.e., non-redeemable and issued without guarantees, a typical characteristic of the time.

On the front, the note features an allegory representing a figure sitting on merchandise in a port, with ships sailing in the distance. A variation of this allegory is visible on the left, while a possible allegory of justice adorns the right. The Latin inscriptions indicate the bank's name, "CANAL BANK", followed by "The New Orleans Canal & Banking Comp.ʸ Will pay Fifty Dollars to the bearer on demand". The date of issue and the signatures of the bank officials, "_____ Cash.ʳ _____ Pres.ᵗ", are also present.

The back of the note displays the abbreviated name of the bank, "CANAL BANK", as well as the city of issue, "NEW-ORLEANS", and the numerical value, "50". The name of the printer, "Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New York", is also mentioned. It is worth noting that some notes were cut more widely and may have folded edges on the back, as observed on this copy.
