This Italy 1 euro coin 2003 features on its national side the famous Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci, one of the most iconic works of the Italian Renaissance.
Created around 1490, the original drawing studies the ideal proportions of the human body based on the writings of the Roman architect Vitruvius. Leonardo da Vinci depicts a man in two superimposed positions, simultaneously inscribed within a circle and a square. This motif was chosen by Italy to illustrate the Italian 1 euro coin since the introduction of the euro.
The obverse also features the monogram RI for Repubblica Italiana, the letter R for the Rome mint, the year 2003, and the initials LC of Laura Cretara, designer of this national side.
The common reverse shows the face value 1 EURO and features the representation of Europe used on the first series of euro coins.
This Italian 1 euro coin 2003 is bimetallic, with an outer ring in nickel-brass and a centre in cupronickel. It measures 23.25 mm in diameter and weighs 7.50 g.
A sought-after circulation coin to complete a collection of Italy euro coins by year or a collection dedicated to the various 1 euro coins of the eurozone.
