Obverse: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG
Reverse: ADVENTVS AVGG
The reverse depicts Philip I on horseback, moving to the left, dressed in his military attire. The emperor raises his right hand as a sign of authority or adlocutio, while his left hand holds a spear, a traditional attribute of Roman military power.
Philip I, originally from the province of Arabia, came to power in 244 following the death of Gordian III during the campaign against the Sassanids. He quickly concluded peace with the Persian king Shapur I, allowing him to consolidate his authority in Rome. Around 245, at the time of this issue, he led campaigns on the Danube against the Carpi and other peoples of the region in order to strengthen the security of the Danubian frontier. The equestrian depiction on the reverse reflects this desire for military legitimation: it asserts the emperor's martial power and portrays his role as commander of the armies. In 248, Philip presided over the celebrations of Rome's millennium, a major symbolic moment of his reign, before being defeated and killed at the Battle of Verona in 249 against his rival Decius.
