Make an offer

The Unified Regional Voucher of 50 centimes from the commune of Marteville-Attilly is an emergency banknote issued in France, bearing witness to a particular period in French monetary history marked by shortages of small change.

Unified regional vouchers were put into circulation mainly during and after the First World War, when the hoarding of metal coins and the difficulties in supplying fiduciary currency forced many communes, chambers of commerce and regional groups to issue their own local means of payment. These emergency issues were intended to make up for the severe lack of small change in daily commercial transactions.

The commune of Marteville-Attilly, a French locality, took part in this unified regional voucher system by issuing this note with a face value of 50 centimes. This type of numismatic document is of considerable historical interest, as it reflects the local economic organisation and the mutual aid mechanisms put in place by local authorities to maintain commercial exchanges during times of crisis.

These unified regional vouchers differ from conventional banknotes in their strictly local or regional nature, their acceptance being limited to a defined territory. They nonetheless constituted a recognised substitute currency accepted by merchants and inhabitants of the area concerned.

From a collector's and historical perspective, this 50 centimes note from the commune of Marteville-Attilly represents a rare document bearing witness to the local monetary practices of the time. Unified regional vouchers from small communes are particularly sought after by specialists in French emergency currency, due to their often limited mintage and their intrinsic fragility linked to the paper nature of the medium, making well-preserved examples relatively rare on the numismatic market.
