This 50 centimes note was issued by the Chambre de Commerce de Carcassonne, the representative institution for trade and industry in the department of Aude. It bears the date of 30 April 1917, a period during which many French chambers of commerce were forced to issue emergency currency due to the shortage of metallic coinage caused by the First World War.
This type of emergency note, commonly known as a "chambre de commerce note", was put into circulation to compensate for the lack of small change, as the constituent metals had been requisitioned for the war effort. The Chambre de Commerce de Carcassonne was thus among the many local and regional institutions authorised to issue this type of temporary and locally valid paper money.
The presented example bears the mention « ANNULÉ » (CANCELLED), indicating that it was officially withdrawn from circulation and invalidated by the issuer. This cancellation overprint was generally applied when notes were withdrawn at the end of their validity period or during the liquidation of emergency issues, a common practice at the end of the war and in the years that followed. A cancelled note of this nature is of particular interest from a historical and documentary perspective, bearing witness to the administrative process of withdrawal from circulation.
These documents are today precious testimonies of local monetary organisation in times of crisis, reflecting the ability of French regional institutions to respond to the immediate economic needs of their territories during the First World War.
