This commemorative 200 dinars coin was issued by the Bank of Algeria in 2021 in tribute to Ahmed Zabana, an iconic figure of the Algerian War of Independence, known for being the first militant of the National Liberation Front to have been guillotined by the French authorities on 19 June 1956 at Barberousse Prison in Algiers.
The coin is made using a bimetallic technique, a minting process combining two distinct metal alloys, generally consisting of an outer ring and a central insert of different compositions. This process gives the coin a contrasted visual appearance and increased resistance to counterfeiting.
With a diameter of 28 millimetres and a weight of 12 grams, this coin features dimensions characteristic of bimetallic commemorative coins intended for regular or semi-regular circulation.
The obverse of the coin traditionally depicts the portrait or symbolic attributes of the honoured personality, in this case Ahmed Zabana, whose real name was Mohamed Zabana, born in 1926 in Oran. The reverse generally bears the institutional inscriptions of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, as well as the face value of 200 dinars and the year of issue 2021.
This issue is part of the Algerian numismatic tradition of commemorating historical events and personalities who have shaped national history, particularly in the memorial context surrounding the War of Independence. The coin was issued from Algiers, the seat of the issuing monetary institution.
