The 5 Rand coin, minted in South Africa in 2008, is an example of a bimetallic coin commemorating Nelson Mandela. This coin has a face value of 5 rands and was issued by the South African Mint.
The coin weighs 9.4 grams and has a diameter of 26 millimeters. It is struck in bimetal, combining two different metals to create a visual contrast and increase its security. The design and specific metals used are not detailed here.
Nelson Mandela, born on July 18, 1918 in Mvezo, Cape Province, South Africa, and died on December 5, 2013, was an iconic figure in the fight against apartheid. Born into a Xhosa chieftaincy, he studied law and joined the African National Congress (ANC), a multiracial party fighting against racial segregation. In 1961, he founded the armed wing of the party, Umkhonto we Sizwe, to carry out sabotage actions against government infrastructure.
Mandela was imprisoned in 1962 and released 27 years later thanks to international pressure and the initiative of President Frederik de Klerk. In 1994, he became the first president of a democratic South Africa, forming a multiracial government and working for national reconciliation. Mandela and de Klerk jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for their role in the transition to a post-apartheid South Africa.
This coin is graded UNC (Uncirculated), which indicates a high state of preservation, with little or no signs of wear.
