Obverse: Four caricatured figures are depicted in distinct poses: President Poincaré kneels facing left with his hands joined in prayer. Beside him, a British soldier in a kilt, cap, and puttees also kneels facing left, his hands clasped imploringly. King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy stands facing forward, holding a sword with its point resting on the ground. Finally, Tsar Nicholas II is shown half-kneeling to the left, his right arm raised while holding a knout under his left arm. Legend: DER BITTGANG AM BALKAN 1915 Translated: "The Courtship of the Balkan (Kings), 1915."
Reverse: The kings of Romania (Charles I), Greece (Constantine I), and Bulgaria (Ferdinand I) watching safely from behind a fence while the Allies offer them various bribes. These desperate gifts include British gold coins spewed by a dolphin (GROSS...), Italian lemon (I), a bleeding French heart (RF), and a threatening Russian fist (RUSS...). Legend: Hilfe! Balkan! Streit für uns! Translated: "Help! Balkans! Fight for us!"
The Courtship of the Balkan Kings (Bittgang am Balkan) medal by Karl Goetz ridicules the diplomatic efforts of the Allied powers (Triple Entente) as they desperately tried to win over neutral Balkan nations to their side.
