French Ecu of 1792 A counterstamped with the arms of Bern on the obverse and 40 BZ on the reverse.
40 Batzen Countermark (1816-19).
Following the wide circulation of the 6 livres écu over a long period of time the cantons of Bern and Vaud decided to introduce 40 Batzen countermarks between 1816 and 1819 of the same value as the local Swiss currency. The “leafy” edge type has been reworked which is typical of countermarked coins.
