Byzantine Empire, follis of forty nummi, bronze, struck under emperor Justinian I who reigned from 527 to 565. Mint of Constantinople.

Obverse: the helmeted, diademed and cuirassed bust of Justinian facing, holding a globus cruciger in his right hand and a shield on his left, with a cross in the right field. The legend reads D N IVSTINIANVS P P AVI.

Reverse: a large letter M, the mark of value for forty nummi, with a cross above. To the left stands ANNO, to the right the year of the emperor's reign, an officina letter sits below the M and the mint is named in the exergue.

Justinian I ruled the eastern Roman empire, the part we now call Byzantine, from 527 to 565. He is remembered for the church of Hagia Sophia, for his great collection of Roman law and for the wars that brought back parts of the old western empire. In his twelfth year on the throne he reformed the copper coinage. The new folles became large and heavy and for the first time carried the year of his reign on the back. This piece is one of those big folles. The letter M stands for forty nummi, which made one follis, and the armoured bust with the globe and cross shows the emperor as a Christian ruler.

For payments within Europe I recommend an IBAN transfer (SEPA), which saves you the extra costs of third parties.
