Archbishopric of Salzburg, 1/9 thaler, klippe, 1669, Max Gandolf von Kuenburg, silver. The coin is holed.

Obverse: arms in an ornate oval shield under the bishop's hat and regalia. Legend: MAX GAND D G AR EP SAL SE AP L (translated: Maximilian Gandolf, by the grace of God Archbishop of Salzburg, Legate of the Holy See).

Reverse: Saint Rupert seated, turned slightly right, holding crozier and salt box, within an inner circle. Legend: S RVDBERTVS EPS SALISB 1669 1/9 (translated: Saint Rupert, Bishop of Salzburg, 1669, 1/9).

Max Gandolf von Kuenburg was elected Archbishop of Salzburg on 30 July 1668 and received the pallium on 8 December 1668, so this coin falls in his first full year. In Salzburg he had the Erhardkirche and the Kajetanerkirche built, among others. During the siege of Vienna in 1683 he sent 800 soldiers, weapons, ammunition and money to help the city.
