Historical context
This medal depicts Leopold II (r. 1865–1909), second King of the Belgians and a prominent – though controversial – figure in Belgian and colonial history. The medallist A. Fonson was active in the late 19th and early 20th century and known for his finely executed official portraiture. The reverse presents a classical personification, possibly Victory or Fame, in the elegant style of the Belle Époque, symbolizing peace or national glory. This type of medal was likely issued for commemorative or ceremonial purposes during or shortly after Leopold II’s reign.
