Apollodotos II – AR Drachm, ca. 85–65 v.Chr., Indo-Greek Kingdom – Athena Alkidemos Type
Obverse: Diademed and draped bust of Apollodotos II to right; Greek legend: “ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ ΚΑΙ ΦΙΛΟΠΑΤΟΡΟΣ ΑΠΟΛΛΟΔΟΤΟΥ”.
Reverse: Athena Alkidemos advancing left, brandishing thunderbolt in raised left hand and holding shield on right arm; monogram in left field; Kharoshthi legend: “Maharajasa tratarasa Apaladatasa”.
Historical Context:
Apollodotos II was one of the last major Indo-Greek rulers, reigning in the mid-1st century BCE in the region of Gandhara and western Punjab. He styled himself “Soter” (Saviour) and “Philopator” (Lover of his father), titles that emphasize legitimacy and dynastic continuity. His coinage combines Hellenistic iconography with Indian epigraphy: the reverse legend is in Kharoshthi script, aimed at the local population. The image of Athena Alkidemos, the “defender of the people,” became a symbol of royal protection and divine authority, frequently used on coins from Menander I onward.
