Dutch Fire‑Brigade Token “P C – 3” | probably Amsterdam (Overtoom / Nieuwer‑Amstel) – 3rd Pump Company
Obverse
Large incuse letters “P C” (left P, right C) with the numeral 3 below.
Double raised border; cast in brass/bronze, Ø ≈ 40 mm.
The letters are cast, not engraved. Most specialists read “P C” as “Pomp‑Compagnie” (“Pump Company”), the volunteer crew assigned to a specific fire‑engine.
Reverse
Detailed depiction of a Jan van der Heyden hose‑fire‑engine: rectangular tank, central suction block, twin swing‑handles, and coiled leather hose inside a braided ring.
Matching double rim as on the obverse.
Historical Background:
After the invention of the revolutionary hose fire‑engine by Jan van der Heyden (1672), Dutch towns organised volunteer pump companies. Each fire‑fighter (spuitgast) received a token that served three purposes:
Identification – handed in on arrival at the fire scene.
Attendance premium – used to allocate payment for swift turnout.
Logistics – the crew chief could immediately see to which pump and position the bearer belonged.
Tokens without a city coat‑of‑arms but with large initials are typical for the Amsterdam hinterland (Overtoom, Nieuwer‑ & Ouder‑Amstel). The style, diameter and identical pump engraving match this group closely (cf. Knijnsberg 1986, pl. 2 no. 6; Nuijttens 1994, pp. 32‑35). In Amsterdam museum catalogues, “P C” is explained as “Pump Company”; the figure 3 then marks the bearer’s number within that company.
