The 1 Leu banknote issued in 2014 by Romania is made of polymer. It commemorates Nicolae Iorga, a renowned Romanian historian, whose portrait is featured on the front of the banknote.

On the obverse, the portrait of Nicolae Iorga is highlighted, accompanied by a gentian flower (Gentiana asclepiadaea) and the coat of arms of Romania. It also includes the name of the issuing bank, the logo of the National Bank of Romania (BNR), the face value of the banknote in numbers and letters, the authorized signatures of the governor and the chief cashier, as well as the date of issue.

The reverse of the banknote features the Episcopal Cathedral of Curtea de Arges Monastery and the old coat of arms of Wallachia, depicting an eagle holding a cross in its beak. The face value of the banknote is also indicated in numbers and letters, with the name of the issuing bank and the BNR logo positioned in the upper right and lower left corners.

The banknote incorporates legal provisions against counterfeiting, warning that the printing and circulation of counterfeit banknotes are punishable by law. The serial number is printed in black ink vertically on the left side and in red ink horizontally on the right side.

The watermark reveals the portrait of Nicolae Iorga and the logo of the National Bank of Romania. The banknote is printed by The National Bank of Romania Printing Works and measures 120 × 62 mm.

Nicolae Iorga, born in 1871 and died in 1940, was a Romanian historian, writer, politician, and professor. He specialized in Romanian medieval history and the history of Southeastern Europe. He was assassinated in 1940.
