Roman Republic – T. Cloelius, AR Quinarius, Rome, 98 BC – Jupiter and Victory with Trophy – Crawford 332/1b
Obverse:
Laureate head of Jupiter right; control mark below chin.
Reverse:
Victory standing right, crowning a trophy; below, a captive seated with hands tied behind his back. In field: “T·CLOVLI” vertically downwards; letter in exergue.
Historical Context:
Struck in 98 BC by the moneyer Tiberius Cloelius, this quinarius features a classical depiction of Roman military success. Victory, crowning a trophy with a bound captive below, celebrates Roman dominance, while Jupiter’s image on the obverse reinforces divine sanction. This issue falls in the later phase of quinarii production, typically minted for circulation in regions where the half-denarius standard remained relevant
