They could be one of the most iconic coins known in the Netherlands: the Leeuwendaaler. Since 2017, this coin has been a recurring item in the annual program of the Royal Dutch Mint.
The Leeuwendaaler owes its name to the characteristic representation of a Dutch lion in this unique numismatic piece. The coin was first minted in 1575 by the Dutch provinces. Each province had its own lion and mint where these coins were minted. Leeuwendaaler were mainly used for maritime trade and quickly became internationally appreciated commercial currencies.
