May 31, 1976: a unique moment in Dutch sports history. The first official kickboxing fight takes place in the Netherlands. A few months before, the karateka Jan Plas made a trip to Japan, where he was introduced to this martial art. Inspired by what he sees here, he aims to popularize this sport in the Netherlands as well. And he succeeds, because almost 50 years later, kickboxing is more popular than ever. To honor four legends of kickboxing in the Netherlands, in combination with the first major GLORY Grand Prix tournament in 10 years, the Royal Dutch Mint is releasing a very special set!
Let's go back to the beginning: after that afternoon in 1976, kickboxing is booming in the Netherlands. And in the following years, several well-known names emerge. However, there is a somber atmosphere around kickboxing in the 80s and 90s, ensuring that the sport is not always linked to positivity. But at the same time, the sport also had a great period in the 90s, where names like Ernesto Hoost, Peter Aerts, Remy Bonjasky and Semmy Schilt gave Holland a real boost at international level.
